Project Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer Our Ombudsman Volunteer Program serves individuals aged 60+ who are residents of long-term care communities in Eau Claire, Chippewa and Clark Counties. This volunteer program is a friendly visitor in memory care or assisted living communities to make sure residents are living with dignity and respect. Many of our residents in LTC do not have family or friends in the community and need an advocate that will help empower them and give them the tools needed to advocate for themselves.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The mission of the Board on Aging and Long-Term Care is to advocate for the interests of the state's long term care consumers, to inform those consumers of their rights, and to educate the public at large about health care systems and long-term care.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Prior knowledge of how to advocate for people. Experience working with people 60+ years of age. Experience working with individuals with memory loss or other cognitive disabilities. Ability to communicate with administration at a facility and work with staff expressing complaints or concerns of residents. Oral, written and ability to complete monthly reports in a timely manner.

4.

What are the learning objectives for this project

Answer The volunteer will learn how to advocate for residents and how to help the resident empower themselves to live with dignity and respect. The volunteer will learn how to problem solve and work with residents living in a LTC community. The volunteer will obtain skills on how to work with a resident who is living with memory loss or other disabilities. The volunteer will establish rapport with administrators and staff of LTC communities.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer The student will have an initial mandatory training that will be in person at the LE Phillips Memorial Library from 10 am to 3 pm. We have additional trainings virtually that are once a month for one and a half hours. We ask that the student is available to volunteer once a week, any day of the week for up to two hours at a time between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm. We are also looking for a student who wants to continue volunteering after the initial 15-hour requirement is completed for up to 6 months.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer Board on Aging has volunteers that are committed to volunteering at a long-term care community for up to 6 months and longer. Current volunteers find this experience rewarding and continue to volunteer because they find it important to assist residents to live with dignity and respect. We hope that students that complete the program will continue to serve residents in the LTC community they have been assigned to.
