Project Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The UWEC’s Hmong Student Association (HSA) is hosting the 35th Annual Culture Core Conference. Culture Core is a thematic conference that addresses issues raised by the complexities of diverse cultural, social, and epistemological traditions. The free event, which is open to all, seeks to empower attendees by creating a space for critical conversations of identity, social issues, and culture. This year’s theme is Rov Txheeb Txhais Caj Ceg Hmoob: Kev Loj Hlob Rau Yav Pem Suab | Redefining Hmong Identities: Growing Towards Tomorrow. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and support Culture Core to ensure a successful conference. For example, student volunteers will help set up the day’s agenda, prepare and cook traditional Hmong food, and facilitate group discussions. They will learn how to prepare and cook traditional Hmong food, along with organizing a large-scale conference. To help meet this community need, I will actively participate in planning and organizing the conference. My specific responsibilities include organizing the agenda, assisting in preparing and cooking Hmong food, coordinating volunteers, and planning group facilitations before the event. I will also help with set up, welcoming guests, and ensuring the conference runs smoothly so attendees feel supported and engaged. Throughout planning this event, I have explored the importance of culture preservation, representation, and community education. I learned that this need exists because many cultural traditions, including Hmong traditions are not widely represented or understood in mainstream spaces. A free community based event, such as Culture Core, helps create access to cultural education, promote inclusion, and provide opportunities for learning. HSA addresses this by hosting an annual conference that combines education, food, leadership development, and community dialogue.
