Project Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer National History Day is a program meant to get middle and high school students interested in and engaged with historical research and projects. Students work with their teachers to create posters, documentaries, and other projects which they present at regional competitions. Successful projects then go on to compete at statewide and national competitions. UW-Eau Claire hosts the competition for this region, and history students often serve as judges for the competition.

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer From NHD's website: "NHD’s core program is its competition in which students in grades 6–12 choose a topic and dive deeply into the past by conducting extensive research in libraries, archives, and museums. They then present their conclusions and evidence through papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites, moving through a series of contest levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. "Through this process, students develop skills in communication, project management, and historical thinking. Their teachers do as well."

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer Judges determine the historical accuracy, clarity, and execution of the students' projects. Judges therefore need to understand historical thinking, project design, research skills, and communication.

4.

What are the learning objectives for this project

Answer Students apply the learning from their history courses, especially the methods and capstone courses, and effectively articulate those to the middle and high school learners involved in the project.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students must be available from 8:00-2:00 on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. They must also be available for outside training and debriefing.
