Project Proposal Description

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The Eau Claire Hmong New Year (ECHNY) service-learning project supports cultural preservation, intergenerational connection, and cross-cultural understanding within the Eau Claire community. The event addresses the need for greater visibility and celebration of Hmong traditions while providing opportunities for cultural education to the broader public. Volunteer actions include assisting with set-up and logistics, guiding attendees, supporting cultural activities, and ensuring smooth event operations. The project explores the significance of the Hmong New Year, the challenges the community faces in maintaining cultural identity, and how collaborative efforts with the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association contribute to cultural pride and inclusion.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer Multicultural Student Services (MSS) strives to foster the success of students through mentorship, innovative programming, supplemental advising, and personal development. We are dedicated to cultivating a welcoming and inclusive campus environment. Through outreach and community building, we celebrate and validate the lived experiences of our students to enhance their collegiate experiences, prepare them to graduate, and positively impact our global society. Multicultural Student Services (MSS) advocates for a community and environment where the belonging of all students is inseparable from institutional and student excellence through collaborative efforts with internal and external partners. With work based in critical analyses, MSS aspires to be a community leader in creating practices and systems that support multicultural student identity development and success while engaging the wider Blugold community through social education and programming. Through these efforts, we provide students with the foundations for active citizenship and lifelong inquiry.

Answer Students should have good time management skills, top organizational skills, and good interpersonal skills.

What are the learning objectives for this project

Answer Analyze the significance of the Hmong New Year as a vehicle for cultural preservation by explaining at least two specific traditions observed during the event and describing one challenge the Hmong community faces in maintaining its cultural identity in a new context. Facilitate intergenerational and cross-cultural connections by demonstrating effective communication with Hmong elders and youth during volunteer activities and articulating the importance of these connections for community cohesion and cultural continuity. Articulate the role of collaborative community efforts in promoting cultural pride and inclusion by summarizing the partnership between ECHNY and the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and evaluating their own contribution to increasing the visibility of Hmong culture within the broader Eau Claire community.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer Students should be able to work both days of the event. Eau Claire Hmong New Year event on October 10–12, 2025, with a commitment of at least 3 to 4-hour volunteer shifts. Preparation includes orientation on October 09, 2025, and reflection following the event.
