Project Proposal Description

1.

Briefly describe the project and the community need to be addressed.

Answer The Affinity House is a residential inpatient treatment facility for women with substance abuse disorders. Many of our residents come into treatment lacking coping skills and also struggle with 'downtime' or boredom. Our residents would greatly benefit from learning new skills and/or hobbies. By learning new skills and hobbies, they are strengthening their relapse prevention plans. A large goal for us and our clients is to reduce recidivism, or committing new crimes. If residents can leave programming equipped with healthy skills and a solid relapse prevention plan, they have a stronger chance of remaining sober and crime free

2.

What is the mission of the agency or organization?

Answer The mission statement of Lutheran Social Services is Act Compassionately, Serve Humbly, and Lead Courageously.

3.

What skills are required for this project?

Answer We are open to having students with a variety of skills and abilities. Some ideas we have are a student pursuing an art major could come in and teach painting, or other art mediums; A student pursuing an English or Writing major could come in and teach writing and/or journaling; A Kinesiology student could teach different exercises; A nursing student could teach on health and wellness or smoking cessation. These are just some ideas, we are open to suggestions and creativity.

4.

What are the learning objectives for this project?

Answer I want to normalize addiction and treatment programs by emphasizing that the residents are more than just statistics—they are women with identities as mothers, daughters, and sisters, who have faced trauma and addiction and are actively working to heal and grow. While they often possess strong creative potential, they may struggle to access it. Students involved can learn to serve as guides, teachers, and supportive allies in this process.

5.

What are the availability requirements for the student?

Answer We would prefer to schedule the projects for Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, but we can also be flexible if needed.

6.

Additional information (not required).

Answer We are contracted with the Department of Corrections and any student who would like to complete a project with our program will have to undergo a background check.
